The best changes start first with an individual before it reaches the organizational level. It is best to focus first on individual leadership development programs to ensure the advancement of the company through developing excellent leaders. Leadership development is mainly defined as an activity or endeavour that enhances the quality of an individual or a group to benefit the organization that they are working in. As it has been said earlier, developing individual leaders is one way to ensuring organizational success.

Human Resources Development exists to develop a workforce

In traditional leadership development programs, the abilities and attitudes of individuals is the main focus. This is a good start because individual leaders should learn their strengths and weaknesses first before they can understand others. It is important that a manager thinks of the welfare of the ones who have careers working for him rather than being concerned of the welfare of his own career. In simpler terms, others come first before considering himself. Human Resources Development exists to develop a workforce that would insure the company’s high productivity. Developing such a workforce is quite a challenge and the success of leadership development programs for individuals depends on three variables: the characteristics of the individual learner, the quality and nature of the leadership development program, and the genuine support from the leader’s supervisor for behavioural change.

Why leadership development efforts fail

Companies cannot change the characteristics of the individual learners themselves so they have to capitalize on the quality, nature, and design of the leadership program to guarantee good outcomes. The design of the development program should be able to integrate a range of developmental experiences over a set period of time. This can be achieved by experiencing classroom style programs, business school style coursework, executive coaching, reflective journaling, mentoring and more. The design should also set goals that will be followed by the evaluation of key developmental needs. After a given time period, the achievement should be assessed and evaluated.

Apart from considering the design, there are also factors to consider in leadership development. The reason why leadership development efforts fail is because they fail to consider these key concepts that are very vital to effective leadership development. First and foremost, experiential learning takes a good part in the learning process. It puts the individual into actual position and at the very focus of the learning process. Experience is the best teacher as they say. An individual’s knowledge of his strengths and capabilities will help him become more productive. If a person believes that he can do something, it is sure to produce positive effects. Another key concept is visioning. It is important to develop into an individual the ability to have a vivid image of the desired future of an organization unit or the organization as a whole.

There is another reason why leadership development efforts fail. Organizations fail to develop a program that helps individuals to gain the essential leadership skills that would make them versatile leaders that can be put in a variety of environments and yet not lose sight of his leadership skills. The essential leadership skills include: taking responsibility, gaining focus, developing life purpose, starting action immediately, and developing effective and achievable goals and dreams.

Leadership development is the development of the leader in his totality

Just recently, many organizations have come to realize that leadership cannot only be developed in individuals but also by strengthening interconnections between organizational units and individual leaders and through which the organizational operations are impacted. This gave rise to drawing the demarcation line between leader development and leadership development. Leadership development is the development of the leader in his totality, especially in qualities such as the personal attributes desired in a leader, desired ways of behaving, ways of thinking or feeling. In contrast, leadership development mainly focuses on the development of leadership as a process in itself. This includes interpersonal relationships, social influence process, and the team dynamics between the leader and his/her team.
